How to Grow Peas

Searles Garden Products - Soil mix fertiliser plant food for growing peas

Growing your own Peas at home is wonderfully fun & can be greatly rewarding. Peas grow quickly and produce abundant tasty pea pods for salads, stews or cooked vegetables. Peas are an easy vegetable to grow and can be sown all year round.

Peas are a fast growing crop and send out vine-like tendrils to climb, so the best position for peas is against a fence or trellis. Peas need full sun and a sweet soil to grow well. They should also be protected from frost in the winter months.

PLANTING
Prepare your garden (in the full sun) with a good quality compost. Searles Premium Compost is ideal for digging into your existing soil.

TIP
Now a real trick to growing peas is to sweeten the soil with dolomite or lime. Apply about 150g per square metre and water in well. Dolomite and Garden Lime help increase the availability of soil nutrients and their uptake by the plants, which will make Peas more nutrient-enriched, therefore sweeter.

Peas can either be grown from seed or purchased as seedlings. All can be sown directly into your garden. When planting, space seeds or seedlings 8-10cm apart.

Regularly pick to have a regular supply of pea pods on your vine to prolong the harvest.

FERTILISING
Peas do not require high nitrogen fertilisers, so fortnightly, apply a mild fertiliser like SeaMax Organic Fertiliser Liquid. SeaMax Organic Fertiliser Liquid is fully organic and produces simply tasty peas.
