Arid or Outback Areas

Summer


HERBS – basil will grow very quickly in hot weather, though keep it watered well for a tasty harvest.

FRUIT & VEGETABLES –  try warm loving capsicum, pumpkin, okra, tomato, leek, melons, radish, cucumber and sweet corn.
Keep established plants well watered & under shade if possible. Mulch well.

FLOWERS – plant succulents, cacti, impatiens, petunias, zinnias, dahlias, begonias and verbenas.
Keep gardens well mulched.


Autumn


HERBS - plant chervil, chives, chicory, coriander, dill, fennel, garlic bulbs, lavender, marjoram, mint, oregano, parsley, sage, sorrel, rosemary, thyme, winter tarragon and yarrow.

FRUIT & VEGETABLES – plant broad beans, broccoli, Brussels sprout, cauliflower, lettuce, onion, peas, radish, shallot, spinach, spring onion, tomato and turnip.

FLOWERS – sow chrysanthemum, cockscomb, cosmos, dahlia, everlasting daisy, gazania, geranium, gerbera, impatiens, kangaroo paw, marigold, nasturtium, petunia, portulaca, rudbeckia, salvia, snapdragon, sunflower, torenia, verbena, wallflower and zinnia.


Winter


FRUIT & VEGETABLES – plant artichoke, asparagus, broad beans, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, kale, lettuce, onion, parsnip, pea, potato, pumpkin, radish, rhubarb, silverbeet and spinach.

FLOWERS – sow ageratum, aster, balsam, carnation, celosia, chrysanthemum, cineraria 'Silver Dust', cockscomb, coleus, cosmos, dahlia, desert flame, dianthus, eremophilia, euryopsis, everlasting daisy, gaillardia, gazania, geranium, gerbera, hardenbergia, impatiens, kangaroo paw, African marigold, French Marigold, nasturtium, osteospermum, petunia, portulaca, rudbeckia, salvia, snapdragon, Stuart desert pea, sunflower, torenia, verbena, wallflower and zinnia.


Spring


HERBS – protect plants from heat in late spring. inland areas have a good climate for growing all types of herbs.

FRUIT & VEGETABLES –  stop planting most vegetables by spring, although beans, capsicum, onion, radish and sweet corn can still do well. Harvest by summer. Watch out for fruit flys and control spray lawn weeds.

If planting flowers, use advanced pots to ensure good flowering before it gets too hot (by November/December). Try petunia, vinca, cosmos, marigold, salvia, portulaca, nasturtium and zinnia.
